Just Rule With it...

I am trying to get my head round the rule of thirds and trying to come up with a definition for it. Things is, it seems pretty straightforward in the definitions I found, BUT there seems to be a problem...no, let me rephrase that...I seem to have a problem with it. In some pictures it seems it is pretty obvious, while in others....mmmmm....not so much. It looks to me as if what those lines of the imaginary grid are suppose to do is somehow emphasise the most important element in the picture. In the case of a portrait, it`s not necessarilly the face, could be a raised shoulder, the back, a hand, etc.

So, what I`ve done yesterday is I`ve browsed through some of my pictures, trying to decide which one respects the rule of third. I`m still not quite sure, since I go more by instinct then logic. I`ve picked out some that I`ve photoshoped recently. So, here they are:

Talking about ice cream that goes right to your heart...The photo was taken sepia initially, since the I really like the bench and it`s in the park...wood...bench...trees...plus, it is more dramatic because a few colours have to really `imagine` themselves in such an array of shades as to compensates for the number.

For some reason, black and white seems to work for most close-ups. Probably has to do with the age old idea of contrast and light and darkness. People like a bit of drama, don`t they? The new blockbuster, featuring white as the last colour standing, and black as the boogy-man(though, technically speaking, black and white are not colours, right?)...

Sepia again. Nostalgia (reminds one of gran-gran-gran parents photos) and the ability to make one look posh...what more could a mortal ask for? Playing with sharpness and haziness also gives interesting results.

Noise, sharpen, lights, camera, action!

Maybe a bit like La Dolce Vita sort of feeling to it, though with a touch of violet. Franklu, it reminds me of something else but I don`t remember what so I`ll just go with the movie.

Ok, so these I think are pretty straightforward (I think....I hope!). Now, I`m not quite sure about the following ones...

There doesn`t seem to be anything noteworthy to look at in the direction the head is pointing to, yet the character is not the centre piece of the picture either. So, I think this one does not follow the rule of thirds (can anyone back me on this?).

The thing that makes me wonder about this picture is whether the height is ok. I was thinking if maybe the camera would have been tilted a bit so as to have a medium shot (I think it just falls short of being a medium shot, because it should be just bellow the waist) it would be much better.

Belfast 001

Aaaah, a landscape! I`d say the horizon line is right here but there is something that feels unsettling about the right part of the picture, where the building ends. Hmmm, really puzzled about this...

Anyhow, it`s been an interesting task and I might just have come up with an idea for the 5 second film we are supposed to do by Tuesday....we interrupt this program for...commercials!
